8A waterproof voltage-boosting MPPT solar charge controller for 12V LiFePO₄ batteries and low-voltage solar panels.

The Genasun GVB-8-Li-14.2V-WP combines voltage-boosting MPPT technology with an IP68 waterproof enclosure, making it an excellent solution for marine and other outdoor installations where the solar controller may be exposed to moisture.

Designed for 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ battery systems, the GVB-8-WP can accept solar-panel input as low as 5V for charging and boost the panel voltage to the 14.2V required by the LiFePO₄ charging profile.

It is an ideal companion for specialty low-voltage solar panels such as the CMP 36W Walkable Semi-Rigid Solar Panel, which has a Vmp of only 6.49V.

Why Choose the Waterproof GVB-8-WP?

Marine and outdoor installations can expose electrical equipment to rain, spray, condensation, splashing water, and other harsh conditions.

The GVB-8-WP uses a proprietary potting compound to protect its internal electronics and carries an IP68 waterproof rating.
That makes it particularly well suited to applications where the controller cannot be fully protected inside a dry electrical compartment.

Ideal for:

  • Marine and boat installations
  • Exposed solar installations
  • Vans and RVs
  • Outdoor equipment
  • E-bikes and small electric vehicles
  • Other applications where the controller may be exposed to moisture

Boost Low Panel Voltage to Charge a 12V LiFePO₄ Battery

Most conventional solar charge controllers reduce a higher panel voltage down to the battery charging voltage.
The GVB-8-WP works in the opposite direction.

Its boost (step-up) MPPT technology increases the voltage from a low-voltage solar panel while continuously tracking the panel's maximum power point.

This allows a specialty low-voltage panel to be used in a 12V LiFePO₄ solar charging system without requiring the panel voltage itself to reach battery charging voltage.

Waterproof Protection for Marine Applications

The GVB-8-WP is designed for applications where moisture exposure is a concern. Its electronics are protected by a proprietary potting compound, providing an IP68 waterproof rating.

For marine installations, this provides an additional level of protection compared with the standard GVB-8, which has an IP40 enclosure.

Standard GVB-8: IP40
GVB-8-WP: IP68 Waterproof

If the controller will be installed in a dry, protected electrical compartment, the standard GVB-8 may be a more compact and lower-cost option.

New 12 AWG Flying Leads

The latest GVB-8-WP version includes 12 AWG flying leads made from tinned wire, providing a robust connection for solar and battery wiring.
The wires are supplied pre-stripped for installation.

High-Speed MPPT Tracking

Solar conditions can change rapidly, particularly on boats and mobile installations where panels can experience changing shadows from rigging, antennas, structures, trees, or other objects.

The GVB-8-WP tracks the solar panel's maximum power point at 15Hz, allowing it to respond rapidly to changing light conditions.
This helps the controller continuously seek the panel's available maximum power as sunlight changes.

Efficient Across a Wide Power Range

The GVB-8-WP is designed to maintain high conversion efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions.
Genasun specifies 95–97% typical electrical efficiency for the 12V LiFePO₄ version.
For the 12V models, efficiency remains approximately 94% even at 10% of rated input, helping the controller continue charging when available solar power is low.

Lithium-Specific Charging Profile

The GVB-8-Li-14.2V-WP is configured specifically for 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ batteries.

Charging Specifications

  • Battery chemistry: LiFePO₄
  • Battery configuration: 12V (4S)
  • Charge profile: CC/CV
  • CV voltage: 14.2V
  • Battery temperature compensation: Disabled

This product is intended for 12V LiFePO₄ systems.

Built for Demanding Environments

Genasun controllers are used in demanding environments, including marine applications and other remote installations.
The GVB-8-WP has no cooling fan or mechanical relay, eliminating moving components that can wear out or become clogged.
Its waterproof construction and robust electrical design make it well suited for installations where reliability and environmental protection are important.

Partial-Shade Performance

The Genasun GVB-8-WP uses high-speed MPPT tracking to continuously seek the solar panel's maximum power point.
This is particularly useful in marine applications where partial shade can come from:

  • Sailboat rigging
  • Masts and antennas
  • Bimini hardware
  • Booms
  • Nearby structures
  • Other obstructions

Genasun reports that its advanced MPPT technology can provide significantly more available power than conventional controllers under certain partial-shading conditions.
Actual performance will vary depending on the panel, shading pattern, installation, and available sunlight.

LED Status Indicator

The built-in LED provides a quick visual indication of controller operation.
It helps confirm proper installation and indicates when the controller is charging the battery from solar power and when the battery has reached full charge.

No Fans. No Relays.

The GVB-8-WP uses solid-state electronic design without cooling fans or mechanical relays.
With no moving parts, there are fewer mechanical components subject to wear during normal operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

❔ Why does the CMP 36W solar panel need a boost MPPT controller?
The CMP 36W panel has a Vmp of only 6.49V, while a 12V LiFePO₄ battery requires approximately 14V charging voltage.
A conventional buck-type MPPT controller cannot increase the panel voltage. The GVB-8-WP uses boost MPPT technology to increase the panel voltage to the required charging voltage.

❔ Is the GVB-8-WP compatible with a 12V LiFePO₄ battery?
Yes. The GVB-8-Li-14.2V-WP is specifically configured for 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ batteries with a 14.2V CC/CV charging profile.

❔ What is the difference between the GVB-8 and GVB-8-WP?
The main difference is environmental protection and physical construction.
The standard GVB-8 is IP40, while the GVB-8-WP is IP68 waterproof and uses a potted enclosure with 12 AWG tinned flying leads.
Choose the WP version when the controller may be exposed to moisture or the elements.

❔ Is IP68 the same as waterproof?
IP68 indicates a high level of protection against dust and water ingress under specified test conditions. Installation should still follow the manufacturer's requirements and applicable environmental limitations.

❔ What is the minimum solar-panel voltage?
The GVB-8-WP can charge from panel input as low as 5V, provided the other operating conditions and input limits are satisfied.
