8A voltage-boosting MPPT solar charge controller for 12V LiFePO₄ battery systems and low-voltage solar panels.

The Genasun GVB-8-Li-14.2V is a voltage-boosting (step-up) MPPT solar charge controller designed to charge a 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ battery from solar panels with a voltage lower than the battery charging voltage.

Unlike conventional MPPT controllers that reduce solar-panel voltage, the GVB-8 boosts low panel voltage up to the voltage required to charge your battery. This makes it an ideal solution for specialty low-voltage solar panels such as the CMP 36W Walkable Semi-Rigid Solar Panel, which has a Vmp of only 6.49V.

Made in the USA, the GVB-8 combines high-speed MPPT tracking, advanced electronic protection, low self-consumption, and a compact design for reliable solar charging in marine, mobile, and other space-constrained applications.

Boost Low Solar Panel Voltage to Charge Your 12V Battery

Most solar charge controllers are designed to take a panel voltage that is higher than the battery voltage and convert it downward.
The GVB-8 works differently.

Its boost MPPT technology increases the voltage from a low-voltage solar panel to the appropriate charging voltage for your 12V LiFePO₄ battery.
This makes it particularly useful for specialty solar panels that cannot provide enough voltage to charge a 12V battery through a conventional buck-type MPPT controller.

The controller automatically tracks the panel's maximum power point while boosting the voltage to the required battery charging voltage.

Designed for the CMP 36W Narrow Solar Panel

The GVB-8-Li-14.2V is an excellent match for CMP's 36W Walkable Semi-Rigid Solar Panel.

The CMP panel's ultra-narrow 6" × 58" design allows it to fit into spaces where conventional solar panels cannot. However, its low operating voltage means it requires a boost-type MPPT controller.

The combination provides a compact solar solution for installations where both space and panel voltage are limited.

High-Speed MPPT Tracking

Solar conditions can change rapidly, particularly on boats and mobile installations where panels may experience moving shadows from rigging, antennas, trees, structures, or other objects.

The GVB-8 tracks the solar panel's maximum power point at 15 times per second (15Hz), allowing it to quickly adapt to changing light conditions.

This helps the controller stay closer to the panel's available maximum power as sunlight conditions change.

Efficient Across a Wide Power Range

The GVB-8 is designed to maintain high conversion efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions.

For the 12V version, Genasun specifies 94% efficiency even when operating at only 10% of rated input, with typical electrical efficiency of 95–97%.

That means the controller is designed to continue making useful power even when available solar energy is limited.

Lithium-Specific Charging Profile

The GVB-8-Li-14.2V uses a charging profile specifically configured for 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ batteries.

Charge Profile

  • Battery chemistry: LiFePO₄
  • Battery configuration: 12V (4S)
  • Charge method: CC/CV
  • CV voltage: 14.2V
  • Battery temperature compensation: Disabled

This model is intended specifically for 12V LiFePO₄ systems.

Built for Marine and Mobile Applications

Genasun controllers have been used in demanding environments including marine applications and other remote installations.

The GVB-8 uses stainless steel and nickel-plated brass hardware and has no cooling fan or mechanical relay.

With no moving parts, there are fewer mechanical components to wear out over time.

The standard GVB-8 has an IP40 enclosure. For installations where the controller will be exposed directly to water or the elements, a waterproof GVB-8 version is also available.

Built-In Protection

The GVB-8 includes advanced electronic protection designed to help protect the controller and connected system during abnormal operating conditions.

The controller also includes an LED indicator that provides a quick visual indication of installation and charging status.

LED Status Indicator

The built-in LED makes it easy to check the controller's operating status.

It indicates whether the controller is properly installed, charging from solar power, and when the battery has reached full charge.

Compact and Lightweight

The GVB-8 provides boost MPPT functionality in a compact package:

Dimensions: 5.4" × 2.4" × 1.3"
Weight: 6.5 oz (185g)

Its small footprint makes it suitable for installations where electrical compartment space is limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

❔ Why does the CMP 36W solar panel need a boost MPPT controller?
The CMP 36W panel has a Vmp of only 6.49V. A 12V LiFePO₄ battery requires a charging voltage around 14V. A conventional buck-type MPPT controller cannot increase the panel voltage to the battery charging voltage.

The GVB-8 uses boost (step-up) MPPT technology to increase the panel voltage while tracking its maximum power point.

❔ Is the GVB-8-Li-14.2V compatible with a 12V LiFePO₄ battery?
Yes. This specific model is configured for 12V (4S) LiFePO₄ batteries with a 14.2V CC/CV charging profile.

❔ Can I use this controller with a regular 12V solar panel?
The GVB-8 is a boost controller intended for applications where the panel voltage is lower than the required battery charging voltage. It is not necessary for typical 12V-nominal solar panels that already provide sufficient voltage for a conventional MPPT controller.

❔ Is this GVB-8 waterproof?
The standard GVB-8 has an IP40 enclosure. A separate waterproof IP68 GVB-8-WP version is available for installations requiring greater environmental protection.
