Boat Solar Installation: Five 125W Walkable Marine Solar Panels Powering a 48V Battery System

We recently worked with a customer on a clean and practical solar installation designed to support a 48V battery system onboard a boat. The goal was simple: provide reliable solar charging to keep essential systems running, from everyday electronics to the all-important fridge. This setup uses five of our 125 Watt Walkable Solar Panels, installed directly on the roof for a low-profile and durable solution.

Project Overview

The customer wanted to charge a portable power system similar to an EcoFlow, specifically a Percon 48V battery unit. These types of battery systems are becoming more common because they simplify power management while still providing enough capacity for real-world use on boats and mobile setups.

How the Solar Panels Were Wired

The system uses five 125 Watt Walkable Solar Panels, configured to take full advantage of the battery system’s available inputs.

  • Four panels are wired in parallel and connected to the main charging input. 
    This configuration provides the appropriate voltage and higher current needed to charge the 48V battery system effectively
  • The fifth panel is connected separately to a secondary charging port, which is designed to accept lower voltage input.

This type of configuration is a simple way to maximize charging from multiple solar inputs on modern battery systems.

No Charge Controller Needed

One interesting detail in this installation is that no external solar charge controller was used. The panels are connected directly to the battery system because the Percon unit has a built-in solar charging controller.

Even though the system outputs at 48V, it can accept a range of input voltages, which gives flexibility when designing the solar array.

Real-World Use: Simple and Practical

At the end of the day, this system is all about usability.
The solar panels help keep the onboard battery charged, which powers:

  • Refrigeration (keeping food and drinks cold)
  • Basic onboard electronics
  • Everyday convenience systems
