Good News for Solar Enthusiasts: Now Extended Through 2034!
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has extended the Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC), giving homeowners and boat owners even more incentive to go solar. This tax credit applies to your primary or secondary residence—including certain boats with living accommodations (head, galley, and bunk) registered in the U.S.
What You Need to Know
Tax Credit Rate:
- 2022–2032: 30% of total system costs
- 2033: 26% of total system costs
- 2034: 22% of total system costs
- After Jan. 1, 2035: 0%
Eligibility:
You can claim this credit if you’ve made energy-saving improvements to your home (or qualifying boat) in the U.S. during the tax year. Qualified residences include:
- Houses
- Mobile homes
- Condominiums
- Cooperative apartments
- Houseboats (with proper accommodations)
What’s Covered:
The credit applies to the cost of:
- Solar panels
- Batteries
- Inverters
- Charge controllers
- Wiring and labor costs
Retroactive Eligibility:
Systems placed in service after January 1, 2006, can qualify if the credit hasn’t already been claimed.
Unused Credits:
If your tax liability is lower than the credit, you can roll over unused amounts to future tax years.
How to Claim the Credit

This 100 Watt Walkable Semi-Rigid SunPower solar cell solar panel is very highly rated with the highest commercially available 24.4% efficient solar cells. We split the panel in two halves so they act as two independent panels in one. If one half is shaded the other still produces power, unlike most solar panels where if one portion of one cell is shaded the whole panels goes down. We also use diodes to again split the halves in half again. Plus the A+ grade Sunpower cells even further minimize the effects of shading (Sunpower cells themselves can be partially shaded and still produce power, unlike most other solar cells). A 6 foot long #10 duplex cable from the junction box is included. Drill your own holes if needed in the 4 marked spots, or if on a van roof use our J and H mounting brackets for secure mounting at highway speeds. This new "walkable light" panel is about 3 mm thinner (4mm vs 7mm) with a thinner aluminum backing plate. They are walkable but it is not recommended to dance or drive on. They dissipate heat better than our original walkable panels and thus perform better in hot climates. It is built to withstand the harsh marine environment and is ideal for mounting on a rigid boat deck or van roof or rack.

Our New 4 Quadrant Design
The diagram along side illustrates how these amazing panels work. Instead of the normal 2 quadrant design we use a new split cell design allowing the panel to have four quadrants of solar cells linked in series and isolated with inner panel blocking diodes. If one or two quadrants are shaded, the other quadrants perform at normal output. This can increase shaded panel output by 3 times that of a standard shaded panel.

Custom Marine Products has developed a series of semi-flexible shade tolerant solar panels that have superior performance when partially shaded by boat equipment or nearby objects. These solar panels have high performance SunPower Maxeon cells. The diagram to the left illustrates how these amazing panels work.The junction box is mounted in the center or the edge of the panel enabling the panel to have four quadrants of solar cells linked in series and isolated with diodes. If one or two quadrants are shaded, the other quadrants perform at normal output. The result is a panel that will provide up to three times the output of a standard panel when shaded. These shade tolerant panels are ideal for bimini and dodger mounting where there is boom, mast and instrument pole shading. Patent pending
