You May Be Eligible for a Federal Solar Tax Credit on Your Marine Solar System

Did you know you could receive a federal tax credit for installing a solar power system on your boat? We often hear about tax credits for installing solar panels on our homes, but did you know you might qualify for the same benefit on your boat? Yes, you can!

You can claim the federal solar tax credit for solar panel installations on a boat, provided the vessel qualifies as a "second home". Under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit was extended through 2032.

✅ Who Qualifies for the Solar Tax Credit

You can claim the Federal Residential Clean Energy Credit for solar panel installations on a boat if your vessel meets the IRS definition of a “second home.”
To qualify, your boat must:

  • Be located in the United States

  • Contain a sleeping berth, a head (toilet), and a galley (kitchen)

  • You must own the solar system to claim the credit. Leased or rented equipment does not qualify.

💰 How Much Is the Credit Worth?

The credit is equal to 30% of your total solar system cost for systems installed between 2022 and 2032.
The percentage will gradually decrease after that:

  • 26% in 2033

  • 22% in 2034

⚙️ What Expenses Are Covered?

You can include the entire installed system cost, including:

  • Solar panels

  • Mounting hardware

  • Wiring and connectors

  • Inverters and controllers

  • Solar batteries

  • Labor costs for installation

📄 How to Claim the Credit

To claim your credit, file IRS Form 5695 – Residential Clean Energy Credit along with your annual federal tax return.
If you don’t have enough tax liability to use the full credit in one year, you can carry the unused portion forward to future tax years.

⚠️ Important Notes and Audit Risk

Some tax experts and community forums note that claiming a boat as a second home for tax purposes can be a "red flag" that may increase your chances of being audited by the IRS.
Be sure to keep detailed records and consult with a qualified tax advisor before filing.

🌎 Don’t Forget State and Local Incentives

Many states and local governments also offer rebates, tax credits, or sales tax exemptions for renewable energy systems.
You can search the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for incentives available in your area.
